Foxhill Cheese House has been producing milk for six generations in the lush Annapolis Valley. During the 1960’s more focus was given to dairy production. I remember my father, Hugh, and grandfather, Horace, telling me about delivering milk door to door by horse and wagon to the Port Williams community and supplying Acadia University in Wolfville. Many things have changed since that time and we are proud to continue to produce quality, fresh milk. Since 2004 this milk has been used to make Foxhill cheese, yogurt, and gelato. Today, we also process pasteurized, non homogenized milk in glass bottles, the only facility in Atlantic Canada providing this specialty milk product. Founded in 1948 by Stanislas Labbé and Elmina Fortin, Laiterie Charlevoix pasteurized and distributed farmers’ milk until the 1960s. Over the decades, the company abandoned the sale of dairy products to concentrate on the production of Cheddar, retail and distribution. Evert and Jannie Beyer of Crystal Springs Dairy Company realized a dream when back in May of 2005 they purchased Crystal Springs Cheese. They had always wanted to own a dairy manufacturing facility. After responding to a classified ad in a local industry magazine this dream became reality. The first few years was spent working on Feta and Gouda, expanding the company customer base and perfecting the Art of making cheese. Crystal Springs has been a labor of love and a family passion. Little Qualicum Cheeseworks was established in 2001 by Clarke and Nancy Gourlay. After a career in humanitarian aid and development, the Gourlays, including their three young sons, moved to Vancouver Island to be close to family and explore their dream of making Swiss-style artisan cheese. They started off on a rented farm, with a handful of cows, making cheese in a renovated school-portable. With a growing team of staff and key involvement from Nancy’s parents Ray & Judy Haynes, they were able to purchase 88-acre Morningstar Farm in French Creek, the scenic region between Parksville and Qualicum beach, and Little Qualicum Cheeseworks found its permanent home. Fromagerie La Normandinoise is a typically artisanal, farm-based, family-run cheese factory initially from a dairy farm located in Normandin, north of Lac St-Jean, whose history dates back to 1979. In 2006, the couple Hélène Cadieux and Yvon Fortin founded the cheese factory in order to transform the farm milk and with the vision of integrating their sons, Vincent and Maxime, into it for the long term, and thus continue the adventure with the third generation. The cheese dairy lovingly produces farmhouse-style cheese, produced only from fresh milk from the herd of 50 purebred Holstein cows, fed with forage, corn and soy produced from the farm’s terroir. In 2020, La Normandinoise embarked on a major expansion and modernization project in order to position itself as a leader within the industry and begin the adventure of developing sales outside Quebec. The family also has other ambitious plans for the next few years, we will see what surprises they have in store for us. Products:
