AdrianMartinus Design was founded by brothers Adrian and Martinus Pool in 2012. As carpenters, they were frustrated with the construction material waste they encountered on worksites, and as avid skateboarders, they sought to give new life to broken skateboards. Working in their parents’ garage they began turning hardwood flooring and broken skateboards, many of which were generously donated by local skate shops, into art pieces and home décor. Since 2012, AdrianMartinus have progressively upgraded their tools and machinery, expanded their woodworking knowledge, and evolved their collaborative aesthetic. Although AdrianMartinus now also utilize new materials, they continue to carefully repurpose a variety of woods, always refining design and production processes in order to create unique products with as little waste as possible. Castor Design is a Toronto-based practice run by Brian Richer (a trained architectural stone carver with a degree in English literature and philosophy) and Kei Ng (a trained architect with a background in set design). They are interested in the middle ground between art and design, bringing a sense of irreverence to each project. Materials and their reuse make up an important part of Castor’s aesthetic; burnt out bulbs to make lighting, a rusty shipping container to make a sauna. Hi, my name is Brad Forster and I operate BAM Woodworks. I trained at B.C.I.T. in their Joinery program. After working for a few years, I couldn’t secure an apprenticeship, and needing a full-time job I ended up driving a truck for 23 years.7 years ago I injured myself and had to give it up. The making of these bowls, each of which is unique, is a long process. It starts with a hardwood log which Wilfred splits vertically then cuts into the approximate shapes. He turns the bowl a first time on the lathe while still green. Then it is left to dry for approximately six months. Once the drying process is complete, he proceeds with the final shaping of the bowl on the lathe. The product is then finished with oils or sprays. After that, it is placed in his attractive showroom at the front of the shop which is located in North Bedeque, Prince Edward Island. Products:
