WEST COUNTRY CANOES was begun by Larry Bowers on no more than his passion for cedar canvas canoes. Since 1991 with much perseverance and hard work along with the support and assistance of his family , has enabled the business to grow and prosper. Larry’s canoes are constructed of the finest yellow cedar, which is native to the West Coast. The ribs are steamed and bent over a form and planking is attached to these ribs with brass tacks. The wooden shell is removed from the form, trimmed, decks installed, sanded and readied for canvas. The canvas skin is stretched extremely tight and then the weave is filled with either a traditional or industrial filler. Finally the canoe is finished with 5 coats of spar varnish and 5 coats of marine enamel. We love to build canoes and that is reflected in our finished product.
