Bill’s father, Bill Drury Senior, homesteaded the ranch in 1962. It started out as a hobby for Bill’s dad, who liked to come out on the weekends and play around with his horses, do a bit of clearing and haying, and eat sardines and crackers with his son. After travelling around the world for 3 years, Bill came back to Whitehorse and his dad suggested he might like to try farming as a lifestyle. Bill started working the land in 1976, and never looked back….he cleared, root raked, seeded acreage to hay and oats for animal feed, boarded horses and built a log home and barn. In March 2014, the Fedosoff’s purchased this wonderful riverfront property which not only included a beautiful home but an established APPLE ORCHARD, Petrofka Orchard. We were shocked, along with many others, that full-size tasty apples can successfully be grown in Saskatchewan. In four short years, we have expanded our product line (approximately 50 now), renovated the country store, purchased a clay oven, started offering weekend, school and group tours and further improved the land to include over 1.5 km of beautiful walking trails and riverfront picnic area for all to enjoy. AND . . . we are no where near done expanding and improving our new business venture. Come see us soon! Part of the Canadian made chutney directory.
Hungry Volcano (previously known as Uncle Big’s) was born out of a passion for fiery foods, and the need to spread the Gospel of Fire across Canada and around the world.
Our website was first created in 2003 marketing Hatari Bros., Droolin’ Devil and of course the Uncle Big’s Killer Hot Sauce line. In June 2015, we relaunched as Hungry Volcano, and our line-up has grown to over 550 products, some of which are only available through this very website.
Most of the industry heavy hitters are listed here, and we personally try all of the products to make sure they are the cream of the crop. We also assign our own heat ranking to them:
– Hot: 1-3
A small, family owned and operated preserving company started in 1983. Over the 30 years they have built a business that stands on a foundation of high quality product. Good things can sprout from humble beginnings. Founder Marilyn Rootham started Rootham Gourmet Preserves in 1983 as a way to put the bountiful harvest from her family’s garden to good use. She started selling her jams and preserves at farmers’ markets and to cottagers in Muskoka.
Over time, she developed recipes that have become perennial favorites such as Rootham’s Tangy Red Pepper Jelly. Marilyn’s son Will Rootham-Roberts joined the company in 2010. While Will has developed new products and expanded co-packing and private label services, the company’s commitment to craft food production – local, small batch and all-natural – remains unchanged.
