Hogman’s Custom Rods – Back in around 2011, I was looking for someone to do a decorative wrap on a fishing rod for me. It proved very difficult to find someone able to do it in Canada. So, I bought a book and decided to give it a try. I simply fell in love with doing the wraps and I soon ran out of fishing rods to do them on. The next logical step was to start making fishing rods, so I bought a book and learned how to do that with the help of many hours of Youtube videos, a couple of broken rod blanks and some help from some very dedicated people in the rod making community.
Many rods later and quite a few more discussions with some people who I have come to be friends with, Hogman’s Custom Rods was born. I am grateful to all of the people who allow me to continue doing what I love. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing the reaction to a vision that my clients finally see realized. That is why I do it!
What sets Mykiss Custom Rods apart from most is that I pay very close attention to detail, I use top quality components that ensure cutting edge performance, I work hard to source unique and rare woods and I frequently add customized options such as feather inlays. I currently have an inventory of over 150 varieties of wood from around the world, most of which are highly figured burls.
Sourcing wood for rod building purposes continues to motivate my creativity and every new burl I buy always spawns new rod building ideas. Along with the ever present search for new wood, I am also currently pursuing custom anodized and coated fly rod componentry as well as hand engraved reel seat parts. This melding of art and the need for performance drew me to rod building and continues to motivate me each and every day.

There’s a journey in fishing. It starts when you are young when it’s about catching as many fish as possible. Then on to bigger fish. Then the biggest. But there comes a point when your journey takes a turn. Family comes along. Quality time on the water replaces size and quantity. Watching your children—and grandchildren—go through the same journey you did is now your ultimate prize.
John’s first bushing centerpin reel, crafted in the Hardy Silex fashion, was made in 1975. The praise from friends over the completion of his reel led John to his first batch of centrepins. In 1977, John released seventeen “J.E.M. 77” bronze bushing float reels for BC salmon. Word of mouth on the river banks and in the tackle shops soon flooded John with local and international requests and in 1979 his second batch of twenty fishing reels were released and called The Talisman.

In 2009 I was getting close to retirement and I started asking myself what would I do with the extra time. I decided to look into the possibility of again making fishing reels as I did back in the ’90’s. I did an online search of my old brand name “The Credit Reel” and actually got some hits. From there I posted some pics of my old reels on a local floatboard and there was a lot of interest. In 2012 I decided to go public.
So now I am a retired mechanical engineer with some time on my hands and working again with Canada Fishing Reels. I design all my own reels and machine all the parts in my shop. The reels are not designed in a vacuum however. There are several good friends always on hand who are skilled fishermen to consult with and who test the reels before they are made for sale. My goal is to make good reels that people will enjoy fishing with. If you buy a reel from me I will do my best to make sure you’re happy with it. I look forward to hearing from you!
