In 1881, the local dairy farmers of Lanark County, near Perth, had a good idea. They decided to form a dairy collective, pool their excess milk production and build a factory Balderson Cheese, to produce a local Cheddar. They built a small, wood-frame building at a crossroads known locally as Balderson Corners. The dusty junction was named after John Balderson, a retired sergeant from the British army who was among the first homesteaders in the area in the 1860s. We are Dean and Sylvia Kreutzer. We have always been fruit lovers; Dean’s earliest memories was of picking saskatoons. Sylvia remembers wading through the river to get to the wild blueberry patch up north. But honestly, isn’t that about all the tree fruit we think we can grow here in Saskatchewan? Alton Farms Estate Winery began as a bucket list dream. Marc and Anne Alton purchased the property in September 2005, moving their young family from Bright’s Grove to Aberarder Line in Plympton-Wyoming, with a goal of creating a vineyard and winery, making delicious wines and developing a new wine region. Marc knew that geographically, this location in the middle of the world’s wine belt, the zone between 41 and 44 degrees north, would be an ideal one. Preparations began right away that Fall, so that planting could start in Spring 2006. A test acre was hand planted with more than fifteen different varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, as well as hybrid cold temperature varieties like Frontenac and Marechal Foch. A second test acre followed in Spring 2007, with even more varieties including Shiraz and Baco Noir. The vineyard was then thoughtfully planned out, with an additional acre hand planted in each of the next four years. Today, we have seven acres of producing vines. Products:

At mumm’s Sprouting Seeds we have been farming organically since the 1970s, and selling high quality organic sprouting seed for over 30 years. The farm is located near Shellbrook, Saskatchewan, Canada and through our warehouse located in Parkside, Saskatchewan we can ship anywhere in Canada or the US. We also export overseas. Our sprouting seed business kept growing and growing and by the mid 1990’s it was more than we could handle, so we took the big step of expanding our team. In 2000 we moved our sprouting seeds and office from the farm to an old curling rink in the nearby town of Parkside. Now it’s still more than we can handle, but we have a great crew helping us. The first Empire Cheese Factory was built in the late 1870s on the farm of John Haig who was the first cheesemaker. Today the our Co-op is the only cheese manufacturing plant operating in Northumberland County and the first one east of Toronto! We are now HACCP registered, the top of the heap in food quality standards ! The majority of Empire Cheese is sold through our factory store and various outlets in the Peterborough, Lindsay, Oshawa, Cobourg, Stouffville, Orono, Port Perry, Markham, Merrickville, Uxbridge, Burlington Farmers’ Market and surrounding areas.
