As with all fruits borne from a labour of love, Hanes Hummus is the classic example of a company that became a business despite never intending to become one. Since Hanes Hummus’ early “customers” were friends and family, Yohannes was driven to produce hummus that retained health and freshness as its primary goal. Though his friends heaped constant praise for his hummus and suggested he make it available to a wider public, he never took the recommendations seriously. He continued to make his classic recipe available only to those friends and family who entered his home.
