The company, which started as a sheep-milk Mediterranean-style cheese producer, is based at one manufacturing facility located in St. Marys, in southwest Ontario. Shepherd Gourmet manufactures, markets and distributes a variety of specialty cheeses such as Feta and Ricotta, sheep milk yogurt, as well as skyr.
It’s not just the yogurt produced by St. Marys’ own that’s drool-worthy. The feta cheese, ricotta and skyr also share great taste and a reassuringly short ingredients list. Recently, Stew Cardiff, Shepherd Gourmet’s president, satisfied my curiosity with a tour beyond the front lobby’s popular retail outlet. The Enterprise Drive facility opened in early 2009, after fire destroyed the original Tavistock location, which began operating in 2002.
