Apitius Mandolin Co mandolins are entirely hand made, by me alone, in a climate controlled workshop using only traditional materials and methods. I believe that hand-crafting gives the instruments a quality and “soul” that just isn’t there in modern production line instruments. For example, all of my pearl shell inlays are sawn by hand and though modern computer controlled processes are very precise, they lack the human element of slight variations that make each instrument truly unique, just like the original F-5s. Hi – My name is Stan, my wifes name is Glynnis, together we started making musical instruments at Bigleaf Musical Instruments about twenty five years ago .I concentrate mostly on stringed instruments, (Mandolins, Irish Bouzoukis, Ukuleles, etc.)While my wife looks after the smaller instruments (Drums, kalimbas, Xylophones, and Zithers)We like selling to musicians, but also to people who have never played an instrument before but always wanted to. So we concentrate on several easy play instruments, our shop motto is “Instruments made to be played” My main love is Celtic music, I have played in several Celtic bands playing Mandolin, Bouzouki, Whistle and flute. We have lived and operated in several parts of Canada, but for the last seven years have settled in the Okanagan Valley, a beautiful wine producing region in central British Columbia, I love making musical instruments (and music) and will continue for as long as I am able. Brian N Dean has been quietly building for some of the finest talents in mandolin today. His philosophy is simple: “don’t complicate it”. Each mandolin is brought to life from the rawest of lumber and metals, shaped unhurriedly by hand tools, and tuned to resonant golden standards by self-taught methods. Aged woods, natural adhesives, unrefined shellacs, and aromatic resins come together in musical instruments that sing with grace, power, and ease. Each instrument takes slightly over two months to complete — “there is no hurry”. Approximately eight to twelve instruments are handcrafted per year in Brian’s antiquarian, solo atelier. In 2009 Jeremy moved from Winnipeg to La Riviere, Manitoba; a small farming community in the beautiful Pembina Valley just north of the U.S. border. It is there that he runs his guitar building school teaching people from all over Canada, the United States, Europe and Asia how to construct guitars the “Hamm-tone way”. The method bridges old and new methods, using modern tools that are readily available as well as traditional tools that have proven themselves in the trade. Most people leave the guitar construction course with a guitar that exceeds their expectations in most every way. New for 2018, we moved the shop to Winnipeg, based in the Exchange District. The urban life is quite different from the rural, but business is good. This company is one to watch as the quality consistently increases year to year, the prices are very reasonable, excellent fit and finish, and they have exceedingly great tone and projection. Michael Heiden of Heiden Stringed Instruments began making instruments in the rich music environment of Vancouver, British Columbia in the 1970’s.
