Our first product, Tall Grass Vodka, was proudly launched in the fall of 2016, followed by Tall Grass Gin and the rest of the Tall Grass spirits line. WPG Vodka, our value brand, was introduced in 2019. Our traditional craft distilling process begins with a controlled hand milling or mashing of locally grown grain. Smooth 42 handcrafted liquor is made in Brownlee, SK, in what used to be the town curling rink. Adam Dombowsky and Sacha Elez bought the 20,000 sq ft rink from the town, which has a population of 50 or so, for $1. We spent nearly a year and half to renovate the derelict building, doing nearly all the work ourselves, to create the home of Smooth 42 Craft Distillery. We hand craft our premium alcohol with as much locally sourced raw materials as possible and go the extra distance to make our products exceptionally smooth. We started off growing apples as this is what the family has done for the past 7 generations as Gagetown Fruit Farm. As times change apple sales were found to be lagging slightly with the changes in purchasing systems of stores, which left an abundance in supply but not enough direct sale demand. In 2011 we moved into the cider business which has become very successful for us, but still we have the same problem, we still have excess apples that needed processing. Well since the first time Matthew built a still from a tea kettle, he was hooked! It was everything he loved: fermenting and science, plus just the amazing smells and aromas that come off the still. Every advancement that he made in the evolution of his craft yielded higher quality spirits and more control over the process. The next piece of the puzzle is attending a week long Master Distiller workshop in Kelowna B.C., this further fueled Matthews passion of distillation, seeing hands on how to produce larger volumes with even more efficiency. The Murphy’s Copper Pot Still has been something the brothers have longed to achieve. They started with a modest 100 gallon pot still that had one copper pipe coming out of it and a stainless steel condenser. They would run this still long into the night just to ensure that they had enough corn liquor to fulfill orders. With two years under their belt they ran into a bit of a crossroads. They had the option to upgrade the still and only be out of commission for a short period of time or completely overhaul the distillery and make sure this issue never arose again. The brothers decided to do it all at once. They contracted Mike Delevante to design their still and working alongside him they came up with a masterpiece. Mike brought many years of experience working with other distilleries such as Appleton’s Rum that the brothers knew, he was the right person for this job. Under Reunion Moonshine brand, we produce a 100 Proof moonshine (un-aged whisky commonly known as “white dog”) and five varieties of flavoured moonshine.
