Truth be told, this whole ride really started years ago when Hogie brewed his first batch of beer. He kickstarted an obsession back in 2006 that would drive him to create hundreds of batches, brewed in kitchens, barns, backyards and basements; some great ones, some “interesting” ones, and some crazy ones. At Grit City Distillery we are a tight knit, positive family who likes to work hard, and take pride in everything we do. We began the journey of opening up our Distillery in 2017. What started from a dream, turned into a reality when we purchased our building in March of 2018. Renovations began, and before we knew it- we were putting in 14 hour days. My wife and I have always worked well together, and we knew that raising our kids in a close environment was a priority. Our past employment demanded a lot of travelling, and time away from home. We believe family is #1. We also believe that if your going to do something, be the best at it. Leave it all out on the field, or don’t do it at all. Here at Grit City Distillery we pride ourselves in being creative, and going that extra mile for the small details that might even go unnoticed. Our mission statement is to go above and beyond in every way, and treat our customers with the high amount of respect they deserve. At Gagetown Distilling & Cidery we started off growing apples as this is what the family has done for the past 7 generations as Gagetown Fruit Farm. As times change apple sales were found to be lagging slightly with the changes in purchasing systems of stores, which left an abundance in supply but not enough direct sale demand. In 2011 we moved into the cider business which has become very successful for us, but still we have the same problem, we still have excess apples that needed processing. Well since the first time Matthew built a still from a tea kettle, he was hooked! It was everything he loved: fermenting and science, plus just the amazing smells and aromas that come off the still. Every advancement that he made in the evolution of his craft yielded higher quality spirits and more control over the process. The next piece of the puzzle is attending a week long Master Distiller workshop in Kelowna B.C., this further fueled Matthews passion of distillation, seeing hands on how to produce larger volumes with even more efficiency. In 1997, with ample help from a real-life supporting system that included family and friends, John Allen opened the Propeller Brewing Company on Gottingen Street in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In 2013, he expanded to a second location, on Windmill Road in Dartmouth. Oh, he also added another Allen to the business in 2015, his son Mike. Annex Ale Project is a brewery and tap room located in the Manchester neighbourhood of Calgary and was founded by co-owners Andrew Bullied and Erica O’Gorman in 2015. The proximity of the brewery to Alberta barley and mountain-fed water allows the brewing team to use some of the best natural resources, constantly exploring the relationship between malt, water and hops. In the spirit of reconciliation, we acknowledge that we brew and live on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani), the Tsuut’ina, the Îyâxe Nakoda Nations, the Métis Nation (Region 3), and all people who make their homes in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta. Annex produces four year-round beers and a variety of experimental and seasonal beers. With the recent expansion Annex has added a mixed fermentation program using wild yeast, lactic acid and other funky microbes. In addition to the award-winning beers, Annex produces three sodas using whole, natural ingredients. Thom and Heather (nee Stewart) MacMillan of J.J. Stewart Foods live on the Northumberland Strait in beautiful Little Sands, Prince Edward Island, within a carriage ride of the site of her grandfather, J.J. Stewart’s, original general store. Together they painstakingly prepare each of their fabulous-tasting sauces, jellies and preserves in small batches in their stainless steel kettle. The Troubled Monk Brewery is built around our 15 barrel brewhouse. It also includes four 15, four 30 and seven 60 barrel fermenters. It contains one 10, one 15, two 30, and three 60 barrel brite tanks. We’ve recently added a 500 litre still, and two fermenters designed for spirits. Part of the Canadian made soda directory. By 2009 business was booming! Additional fermentor space was required and built adjacent to the pub. In 2006, we added six soft drinks or handcrafted pop made in Canada to The Grizzly Paw family. Brewed with the same principle as our beer: our soda is brewed with fresh water, local ingredients, and brewed by locals who care. Our sodas are offered in grocery stores across Alberta and British Columbia. All of our products utilize fresh water that streams out of the Canmore reservoir, and real ingredients such as honey, cane sugar, and raspberries. Part of the soda made in Canada directory.
